Gutter slope calculator

Gutters are hung with a slight fall toward the downspout so water does not sit in them. A common recommendation is ¼ inch of drop for every 10 feet of gutter; some installers use up to ½ inch. GutterCalc works out the total drop over the run to each downspout. With two or more downspouts it assumes the runs are equal, so a long gutter can be pitched from the middle toward both ends. This page starts with a 40 ft gutter and one downspout: 1 inch of drop.

Snap a chalk line from the high end to the low end on the fascia and set the hangers to the line.

    How the gutter calculator works

GutterCalc multiplies the drainage area (gutter length × roof depth) by the pitch factor and the rainfall intensity, then picks the smallest gutter of your style whose capacity is at least that adjusted area. Downspouts = the larger of the gutter length ÷ the maximum run per downspout and the roof area ÷ the downspout capacity, rounded up. Hangers = length ÷ spacing + 1. Slope = ¼ inch (or your figure) per 10 feet over the run to each downspout.

Capacities, pitch factors and the 1 sq in per 100 sq ft downspout rule are widely published rules of thumb for residential gutters, not a code calculation; local codes (for example the plumbing code's storm drainage tables) and your installer may size differently. Results are estimates.

    Frequently asked questions

How much slope should a gutter have?

About ¼ inch per 10 feet is common, giving 1 inch over 40 feet.

Can a gutter have too much slope?

Yes. A steep fall looks crooked from the street and can let water overshoot the low end in heavy rain.

How do I slope a long gutter?

For runs over about 40 feet, put a downspout at each end and slope from the middle toward both, or add a downspout in the middle.

    Is GutterCalc free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads.

    Are my measurements saved?

    Yes, in this browser only.
